The Bird Flu Epidemic

The H5N1 strain of bird flu was first recorded in 1997 in Hong Kong where it affected 18 people, killing six. In December 2003, bird flu broke out in Vietnam followed by Thailand. By December 2004, the death toll had reached 32 across Asia.

By mid-2005 it had reached Europe, but no deaths were reported. In 2007-08, the H5N1 strain reached West Bengal in India via Bangladesh. As it spread southwards over the sub-continent, major health concerns are raised.

The New Media-2008 students of Asian College of Journalism (ACJ) decided to compile a wiki that covered related issues like the origin, prevention and awareness by the media.
